Hope Presbyterian Church (HPC) is a church plant from Redeemer Presbyterian, a larger Presbyterian Church of America (PCA) congregation in Winston-Salem. One of Redeemer's priorities is to plant vibrant churches throughout Forsyth County and the Triad, and has already planted Grace Presbyterian Church (Kernersville), HPC and New Hope Presbyterian Church (Clemmons).
HPC began over the winter of 1997-1998, as families started to discuss a church plant from Redeemer to minister in northwestern Winston-Salem. At that time, Stuart Stogner, a long-time associate pastor at Redeemer, and several families and individuals agreed to proceed with starting a church, soon to be named Hope. That spring (1998), they started meeting together as a Sunday school class, and began the process of planning how HPC would be distinct in its worship style, personality, and programs. Many families joined the movement, and over the summer, monthly meetings were held to worship, get to know one another, and plan such distinctives. Such discussions included children's ministries, welcoming visitors, small groups, outreach and missions.
Approximately 20 families were commissioned on August 16, 1998, as the Redeemer congregation officially sent them out as a church plant. The following Sunday, August 23, they held their first trial run service in Jefferson Elementary School. After 3 such trial services, they had their first public worship service on Sunday, September 13, 1998.
At the risk of leaving out an enormous amount of detail regarding all God has done at Hope, below is a thumbnail sketch of a few of the key events in the life of this young church.
